As a brief foray deeper into interactive mapping (before moving to Colorado for National Geographic), I worked with ForeFlight to help design their ForeFlight 8 release global interactive aeronautical cartographic navigation products in MapBox Studio while developing their brand style and adhering to aviation standards for user interface and user experience design.

After I interned at NatGeo and completed my research fellowship in the Caribbean, I moved to rural Maine to intern and then work as a Cartographer and GIS Specialist for the Center for Community GIS (CCGIS)—now rebranded Community Geographics. This opportunity solidified my professional focus on both cartography and outdoor recreation and helped qualify me for my work at National Geographic.
I provided the cartographic visualization and design for 32 mapping projects within defined budgets and timelines, coordinated work on the award-winning Maine Trail Finder (MTF) interactive mapping database, helped run a GPS training with elementary school students, and supervised and trained a student intern in geospatial technologies.
One of CCGIS's major projects, Maine Trail Finder (MTF) is an "interactive mapping site designed to help Maine residents and visitors find hiking, walking, snowshoeing, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and paddling trails across the state ... Detailed trail description pages allow users to view the trails, get essential information, submit trip comments and photos ... and a whole lot more."
As the MTF Project Coordinator from 2013 to 2014, I conducted field work, worked with local partners, moved the entire database to a new website platform, and added and updated numerous outdoor recreation sites to this valuable resource of 700+ non-motorized trails.

"Alison was a pleasure to work with. I can easily recommend her work as she has a keen eye for cartographic design and a strong work ethic. Her work was always done on time and within the scope the budget for the project."
- Jean-Luc Theriault, former GIS Specialist, Center for Community GIS
"The Royal River Conservation Trust is a regional land trust. Aly served as our primary service provider for a series for complex print maps to depict highly varied recreational and conservation assets in multiple towns, for use by the general public. She was at every point responsive, efficient, courteous, and technically skilled. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her for any project, job, or client that comes her way next."
- Alan Stearns, Executive Director, Royal River Conservation Trust
"Aly was our point person at Center for Community GIS last year in creating 7 maps for our multi-day bike event. The BikeMaine Ride maps are clear, informative, easy to read, interesting, and fun to look at; they were extremely well received. Riders said that they were the best maps they had ever had on a ride. Aly and the Center for Community GIS really set a high bar for bike event maps. We have hired them to do our maps this year as well."
- Kim Anderson True, BikeMaine Ride Director, Bicycle Coalition of Maine
"Alison does beautiful work! She assisted the Sandy River Land Trust with a mapping project that began in East Madrid in 2012, resulting in the creation and release of the Perham Stream Birding Trail map/brochure in 2014... This project/publication surpassed our wildest dreams, while remaining within our budget. The work was inventive and outstanding—a superlative example of fine cartography!"
- Sorrel Kelley (née Kirsten Burbank), former Grant Coordinator, Sandy River Land Trust
After taking my first GIS class, I interned with Heritage Protection Group to provide a quantitative emergency response analysis in Esri ArcGIS that evaluated potential sites for Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department facilities and facility upgrades resulting in an estimated project savings for the town and taxpayers of $0.75-$1 million.
"I would highly recommend Aly as an employee. I am an elected official in the Town of Middlebury, Vermont and responsible for emergency services. We are in the process of upgrading our fire department facilities and needed to know if placing the new/upgraded stations on the site of the present stations was the best way to respond to fire emergencies in the community, or if they should be built in alternate locations. This was a very important decision for the current and future (approximate 50 year) needs of the department. Aly's work provided a quantitative emergency response analysis that evaluated a number of available sites. The work showed that the present locations were in fact technically appropriate which saved the Town the expense of acquiring new property and allowed us to proceed with the work during a depressed construction market... This has been helpful for the Town's management, fire department's administration, and the taxpayers who will fund this project."
